Welcome![edit source]
Hi Darren,
Welcome to Appropedia. Please make yourself at home! If you need help, please check out the Help pages or leave me a message on my talk page.
Check your preferences and be sure you verify your email address and turn on email notification if you'd like it -- you can find out when your talk page, or any page on your watchlist, is modified. Please consider uploading some information about yourself to your userpage and feel free to upload a photo as well.
If you have a particular interest or project in mind, go ahead and start it! Feel free to leave me a note on my talk page if you have further questions, need help finding your way around, have a cool idea for a project, or just want to chat. Most importantly remember to be BOLD in your edits to pages. Others will come along and help out.
Glad to have you here, --Lonny
Open Biofuel Engine Development Wiki[edit source]
Hi Darren,
Do you know what's happening with the Open Biofuel Engine Development Wiki? It's been attacked by spam, unfortunately. We'd love to host the content here - do you think the community there would be interested? Also, I'm not sure about the license. --Chriswaterguy 19:32, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
- I don't know how to automate deleting spam bots. You silence the bots, you could perhaps:
- set captcha for all edits with a url, even by registered users, like http://wiki.creativecommons.org/ - not ideal though.
- install Bad Behavior, silently blocking many of the bots. (This works great on WordPress - we haven't tried on MediaWiki yet.)
- If you wanted to go through and delete the bad ones, I can't think of an easy way. You could make up a list of links to user contributions, with the delete link, so you could open each of them more easily. Still lots of work though.
- Something to think about is to actually join up with Appropedia, bring all the pages over, and ask users to register anew here. We've done a lot of this already (about 8 projects of various sizes have come together so far - see Appropedia:A history of collaboration). It will give a much higher profile for your work, and more collaboration. What do you think? --Chriswaterguy 12:03, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
Good start[edit source]
Hi Darren - great to have you working with us on the biofuel pages!
Not sure how familiar you are with our setup here, but a couple of things you find useful:
- There's a signature button on the edit toolbar (just to the left of the middle on the normal toolbar, and harder to find in the rich text editor, 2nd from the right on the top row of the toolbar. Or just type --~~~~
- For finding categories to add, I have Special:Categories bookmarked. Actually, I have this version bookmarked, so the 2000+ pages are listed all at once.
- In preferences, you can set it to add all pages that you create to your watchlist. I like to do this, and I've set my preferences to get the email alerts - I filter them out of my email inbox (except for a few pages I watch closely), but it's easy for me to keep track of pages that I've worked on, or just want to watch.
I've also replied at Appropedia talk:Content Initiatives/Biofuel. Thanks --Chriswaterguy 08:57, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
quick answer re categories[edit source]
"Hello Chris, Had a quick look but couldn't easily figure out how categories and subs work. Was going to scrap vegetable oil fuel and replace with pure plant oil fuel. Vegetable suggests part of the plant is edible and pure to distinguish from biodiesl which is a plant oil based fuel."
Hi Darren,
Sorry for the slow response. That sounds like a good move. Just use (for example) Category:Pure plant oil fuels at the bottom of the relevant pages, and remove categories you don't want. (We nermally use plurals for categories, but it gets confusing with something like "fuel"... I guess the plural is fuels, as in more than one type).
The category you add will be a redlink at the bottom of the page. Click it, and add any categories it should belong to, e.g. Category:Fuels. And always ask if you want help :-).
If a category is not to be used, e.g. Category:Vegetable oil fuel, you can just add {{delete|REASON}} (with your reason).
Thanks! --Chriswaterguy 15:56, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi Darren, as mentioned at Appropedia:Village_pump#Some_article_Renaming I (User:KVDP) would like to contact you so that we can discuss the making of a open-design diesel engine based on my gasoline engine. Could you provide me a e-mailadress here so that I can contact you (just place it here ie in the form _ AT _ DOT com and deleted this message afterwards. I'll meanwhile try to contact you via your vegburner e-mail 91.182.246.207 10:40, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
