Welcome to Appropedia's Portal page for Sustainability
Appropedia is the Sustainability Wiki (just as it's also the Appropriate Technology Wiki) and most of the pages on this website are about sustainability, in some way.
Sustainability is “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”[1] A practice cannot be said to be 'sustainable for X years/generations.' The use of any span of time disqualifies the activity. Sustainability is for perpetuity.
Sustainability not only preserves our planet and the environment we live in, but also can mean greater efficiency in user resources, ultimately giving benefits to economic growth and overcoming poverty, as well as health and quality of life.

Other terms can replace "development", however, and the definition remains valid. "Activities", behaviors", "practices", "energy", "consumption" are some of those terms.
