Tahnok

Heya folks! My name is Tahnok and I'm volunteering as a tech intern this summer. Get in touch with me if you have any suggestions for things I should do or if you want to get me to help out with a project.

I help to organize intern activities here, & I do what I can to help work out tech needs & solutions. But I'm not a coder, & prefer to leave backend implementation to others (feels safer that way).

The most techy thing I've done here is get Pywikipediabot working, with lots of help from that community. Most of the work has been in the regex, which has let me do some very useful linking & category work. --Chriswaterguy 20:57, 9 May 2011 (PDT)

Upgrading MediaWiki version

Apparently the MediaWiki version on the dev wiki isn't recent enough to do work with certain aspects of CAPTCHA. Jason, what's involved in upgrading, & would you like help? --Chriswaterguy 21:32, 9 May 2011 (PDT)

Possibly related, I was looking for a way to have categorytrees display counts of categories and pages separately, like on Wikipedia. For example, here's how Energy looks on Wikipedia - "[+] Energy (30 C, 28 P)" - and how it looks here - "[+] Energy (380)". Maybe that's just a custom feature there or maybe it's part of an upgrade. I couldn't find any note on how to do that on the MediaWiki page. "Showcount" there seems to just be "on" or not. --RichardF 10:40, 10 May 2011 (PDT)
Currently mediawiki is 1.17, but 1.18 has been deployed on wikimedia foundation sites which mean it will be released shortly. Upgrades in my experience have been fairly painless. I would recommend at the very least that the dev wiki be updated to 1.17. --Tahnok 07:37, 7 October 2011 (PDT)
I offer to upgrade to Mediawiki 1.19B2 (DNS Blacklists now work in that version) Ive been running it, and had no issues so far
