Is this image OK to use outside of Wikimedia Foundation projects?[edit source]

A commenter in Commons:File talk:Wikipedia-logo.png#Icon link to wikipedia says to use Commons:File:Wiki letter w.svg instead. (Or Commons:File:Blank template.gif if SVG files are not enabled.) --Teratornis 00:59, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Great question. I will forward this to Chris. --Lonny 06:18, 4 January 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks Teratornis - let's go with Commons:File:Wiki letter w.svg (at least for now - if someone prefers another image, please propose it). I'll upload it over the top of this image.
I really like that it's a piece of a jigsaw, and a piece of the globe - a nice picture of collaboration, interoperability, and the way different sites complement each other. --Chriswaterguy 08:32, 4 January 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And I suppose the "w" character more accurately reflects the English Wikipedia as the source. The copyrighted logo graphic has characters from several languages. Anyway, the copyright notice on the image page is now somewhat misleading, as it no longer applies to the current revision. Is the copyright notice still necessary, given that the copyrighted version is still in the image history? --Teratornis 08:50, 4 January 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
