Ship_compartmentalization.png(715 × 222 pixels, file size: 38 KB, MIME type: image/png)

A schematic showing the lateral cross-section of a ship made based on an image at http://web.archive.org/web/20160304082032/http://www.benthic.ca/report.cfm?report=17 The schematic was altered based with the aft-section of the File:Ship_size_(side_view).PNG by Tosaka.

Note that the composting toilet should be a UDD toilet (urine diverting dehydrating). This to reduce the buildup of the ship's weight as water is absorbed and secreted by the crew (water can eg be produced using a rainwater harvester or "water maker"). Plans for a UDD toilet can be found at http://www.susana.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=152&Itemid=145&lang=en As such, a solar chimney needs to be foreseen; this is best placed at the highest deck of the ship. As such, it may also be useful to place the toilet on an upper deck, due to risk of water buildup in the chimney in case of a leak.

  • A: Waterline, the compartments below the waterline are best foreseen for the storage of goods. Decks above the waterline do not need bulkheads. The deck at the waterline should always be watertight (no open hatches), to avoid water hopping over the bulkheads in case of a leak.
  • B: Internal combustion engine; eg (oxy) or liquid nitrogen-powered, fuel can be optionally replenished from wind harvesters
  • C: Bulkhead
  • D: Deck
  • E: Compartment; can be used for any purpose. Composting toilets (and their tanks) are best placed in compartments that are always sealed (to prevent leakage in case of a leak). Sleeping quarters are best placed on the first deck (above the waterline) or even higher-up. So too the galley as well as other vital rooms that need to be prevented of flooding in case of a leak.

A next version of the file should add coloring to the compartments, indicating their use.
