A schematic showing the primary and secundary shipping lanes. These lanes are boated by large vessels and are intented for large transports. The lanes were designed to follow the most advantagous course to the wind, and are as such still advantageous as, although mostly engines are now used, the wind still creates waves. Currents are somewhat followed as well, which also gives an advantage to the vessel. Small vessels do best to avoid the lanes. The lanes will however probably lose in importance as hydrofoils/low friction hulls do their intrence to boating. Also, the wind direction will also reduce in importance as new sail designs are being used as rotor vessels and windmill ships. The image was made based on an image in the book "Het handboek voor de zeiler" by H.C. Herreshoff.
