Design and creation of an efficient system capable of storing rainwater that can be reused in times of drought for domestic and agricultural use. Likewise, seeking to promote environmental awareness in the country's communities, authorities and institutions to build a more collaborative and committed society with the planet.

Description

The solution is to create a rainwater storage system capable of carrying out a first discharge to remove all dirt from it. In addition to being oriented towards environmental awareness, this idea promotes the eradication of the unnecessary use of water resources, because the rain can be saved and reused in domestic activities and irrigation of crops during the summer. Exposing the efficiency of the system, before communities and authorities, and carrying out awareness campaigns will contribute to creating a more collaborative and environmentally committed society, from rural areas, going through the urban and reaching potential investors.

Problem

Water distribution channels in CCAT

8.7% of the Salvadoran population still does not have access to water in the country. While some sectors that already have access to the vital liquid receive poor and inconsistent service. Lack of supply becomes a more serious problem particularly in summer. Through the Rainwater Catchment System, this and other problems related to access to water are solved, since it would help people to have water in their homes to carry out different activities such as bathing, washing clothes, watering the garden, etc. In this way, the waste of rainwater will also be mitigated, since it will be stored and used later. At the same time,This system avoids flood problems in the streets because the water that caused these disasters will now be used by people.

Innovation proposal

The idea is innovative because it starts from a disruptive concept, since it can generate a great impact on users with little technological development. This represents a simple and simple solution for water scarcity in homes and generates a great impact at an environmental and economic level on families using a storage system for Water.

Integrated value diagram for innovation. Source: Visser, W. (2020). Integrated Innovation: Applying Systems Thinking to Sustainable Innovation and Transformation. Sustainability, 12 (13), 5247.

In addition, it contributes to the use of natural resources by avoiding their exploitation and benefits people and the environment. In this way, it is contributing to the objectives of sustainable development, specifically the 6 that consists of guaranteeing the availability of water and its sustainable management and sanitation for all. Likewise, it can be used in low-income communities or places that are not very accessible for the placement of water systems, thus obtaining directly from the rain and contributing to the accessibility of water in homes.

It is also considered an open innovation, since it can be easily replicable and at the same time improvements can be implemented in this project such as filters that make water drinkable and can be easily suitable for consumption human. This idea also has components of integrated value, as it is sustainable by contributing to rainwater harvesting and contributing to the ecological system. Furthermore, the collection of rainwater instead of the free flow of water on the ground prevents its erosion over time, because there is control over the distribution of water in the land.

Structure and use of the rainwater harvesting system

Value proposition

The rainwater harvesting system is an innovative technology appropriate to promote sustainable homes created to function efficiently and that is environmentally friendly. For this, it is expected that rainwater can be housed in a storage tank and that it can later be used for any activity other than human intake.

Benefits (gains)

CCAT rainwater catchment system, model project

People, especially those with limited resources, will benefit in such a way that their living conditions will improve due to the healthiness generated by the existence of water within their reach. In other words, they will have the accessibility to adapt this instrument in any area of their home they wish and, being an automated process after its installation, They won't have to worry about remembering to leave barrels out or how unsightly it looks.

As long as it is rainy season, those who have the Water Catchment System implemented will have this resource at their disposal. However, they may also have a water reserve for other stations if they so choose with just a small extra investment in the size of the supply barrel.

On the other hand, it is an ideal artifact for environmentalists and other human beings concerned about the health of our planet, since it is capable of meeting the basic daily needs that can perfectly be done with non-potable water, such as washing dishes, the car, watering its gardens, among others. Overall, it is a friendly innovation for everyone and most households, so its benefits extend not only to high-risk communities, but for anyone who wants to save water and make the decision to be greener

Discomfort (pains)

The main pains and discomforts that will be reduced when implementing this business model will be reductions in the concerns of those with an unstable water service, or, those who do not have access to it at all. You can also counteract problems that arise from wanting to keep homes clean, as the water accumulated in the Water Catchment System is capable of helping with anything that is not consumable in nature.

It is also an investment and an improvement in your home because it has a fairly acceptable useful life, so it is not something that they have to be changing every year. It is easy to learn and does not need experts for its maintenance, it is only crucial to understand its basic functions in case at any time it suffers from breakdowns.

Services and activities

The ESEN rainwater harvesting system is an innovative technology appropriate to promote sustainable homes and created to function efficiently and pleasingly to the eye. This will be possible through adaptation of infrastructure in homes with the aim that the gutters serve as the main driver for access to a PVC tube that will be in charge of carrying the water directly to the main tank and then go through a series of sediment filtration processes and other droppings to have clean and ready-to-use rainwater.

In this way, we find an automatic and fast-implementing device with a long service life. In El Salvador, where the middle of the year is winter, an artifact of this caliber, implemented on a large scale, could be the solution to many health problems, lifestyle and comfort for locals.

Value Proposition Canvas for ESEN Water Catchment System

Business model canvas

The business model of this project aims to promote environmental awareness in rural areas, through a rainwater harvesting system to store and reuse water in domestic and agricultural activities. Capitalization is given by the sale and maintenance of the collection system, including the distribution of channels, tank enablement and irrigation extensions. The initiative takes into consideration creating a community committed to the environment from rural areas to urban areas. The sales channels will be both physical and digital depending on public access and training, and an after-sales maintenance and customer monitoring service is added.

It has been contemplated that the most efficient way to reach the client is through Facebook, accompanied by other social networks. The income will be generated by the sales flow of the system and the demand for maintenance and relocation, added to sponsorships and external support. For this, the key resources to be used will be the inputs and construction material, the digital scope and contacts, the technical knowledge and the trained workforce.

Awareness-raising activities will be carried out on the effects of rain on land erosion and a model project will be launched to expose the efficiency of the system to the audience and investors. Then, the project should be promoted both by digital means and by physical campaigns in areas with little access to the network. This requires key partners such as government representatives on environmental matters, small hardware stores and plumbers who wish to come together to provide standardized services, environmental activists and engineers and farmers' associations that promote and use the system. Regarding the cost structure, these are divided between materials and supplies, fees, marketing and transportation of materials.

Conclusions and recommendations

Rainwater Catchment system original on CCAT

In our society there is a shortage and inefficiency of the services that provide water to households and many people who work in agriculture have difficulties in irrigating their crops due to the lack of this resource. The solution to this problem is represented by the water collection system project, as it is a simple and efficient solution to generate a sustainable supply contributing to the use of natural resources.

This project allows the emergence of a new market in El Salvador, which provides households with this collection system that allows obtaining water for daily activities without incurring distribution costs. It is also an excellent option to guarantee access to water in communities and availability to irrigate crops.

Although the system has high costs initially, economies of scale can be exploited by creating alliances with the main suppliers of the materials used to create the collection system and thus integrate the industry. This project allows creating sustainable life options that do not harm or compromise the future of subsequent generations while improving the quality of life in today's society.
