UTC timestamp[edit | edit source]

Change the time stamp from PDT/PST to UTC (or GMT which is the same thing... for some reason UTC is used at Wikipedia - maybe GMT suggests the user is in the UK, whereas UTC is just a universal time?) --Chriswaterguy · talk 16:33, 21 December 2007 (PST)

Make redirects show in italic on Special:Allpages[edit | edit source]

Done - the fix is in the Common.css file.

Import Images from WikiGreen[edit | edit source]

These steps were completed for integrating WikiGreen (ExportWIkiSite) into Appropedia (ImportWIkiSite), but could be used to upload many photos from any repository:

  1. download images folder from ExportWikiSite
  2. Remove unwanted folders, such as temp, archive and thumb (these will be recreated)
  3. Flatten directory
    • I know that there is some way to do this with tar, or recursive copy, but I gave up and downloaded the freeware xxcopy (www.xxcopy.com)
    • xxcopy "C:\ImageFolder" "C:\ImageFolderFlat" /SG
    • Make sure to use /SG the one normally suggested renames augments the filenames.
  4. Check for duplicates with ImportWikiSite
    • Rename any duplicates, then (if you are importing pages as well) find reference to the old name in the imported pages and change name to the new name.
  5. Use importImages.php
    • For some reason the version show php5 but commands were being executed by php4 so I used: /usr/local/php5/bin/php importImages.php --user=Lonny --comment="From www.wikigreen.org via Eric Blazek" ../WGImgFlat png
    • Do this for each filetype, e.g. jpg, gif, etc.
  6. In addition, something happened to the importImages.php file in transport, so I redownloaded it, and everything worked.

Import Pages from another wiki[edit | edit source]

How did we do that?

Renaming a user[edit | edit source]

  1. Download the three files at http://svn.wikimedia.org/svnroot/mediawiki/trunk/extensions/Renameuser/
    • SpecialRenameuser.i18n.php, SpecialRenameuser.php, SpecialRenameuser_body.php
  2. Copy these three files to the /includes directory
  3. Download the ExtensionFunctions.php
  4. Copy the ExtensionFunctions.php to the main directory
  5. Add the following line to the LocalSettings.php near the other require_once lines.
    • include_once('includes/SpecialRenameuser.php'); #LRG 1_14_07 used for renaming users
  6. Log in and navigate to Special:Renameuser
  7. Manually move the Userpage and any Userpage/subpages.
I wrote this up in a more general form at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Renameuser
How to rewrite old signatures? A bot maybe.
See User:Chriswaterguy / User:Singkong2005 for an example.

ImageMap Extension[edit | edit source]

Available to Mediawiki version 1.9. Allows us to have our featured project image lead to the project rather than the image info.

  1. Make a directory in extensions: ImageMap
    mkdir ~/appropedia.org/extensions/ImageMap
  2. Download all files from subversion http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/extensions/ImageMap/ the newly created ImageMap directory.
  3. Add the following line to LocalSettings.php
    require_once( "$IP/extensions/ImageMap/ImageMap.php" );

Find more detailed information here http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ImageMap

CategoryTree extension[edit | edit source]

Details and download: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:CategoryTree

Follow instructions in the README file.

Important: Change the file permissions recursively for extensions/CategoryTree.

chmod -R 771 CategoryTree

New User Welcome Message[edit | edit source]

New users that register an email are automatically sent a confirmation code to validate their address. This seems like the appropriate place to add general Welcome to Appropedia.org information.

Edit the confirmation/welcome message here: MediaWiki:Confirmemail body

Short URLs[edit | edit source]

  • See wikimedia and User:Helge.at
  • Set path in LocalSettings.php to $wgArticlePath = "/$1";
  • Added .htaccess to root with the following content

More notes[edit | edit source]

Still not working correctly.

Fix RecentChanges cache[edit | edit source]

Fix RecentChanges cache (?) so it's possible to view more than 7 days:

A simple code change which seems to produce something more like the intended results (suggested by Woozle from Issuepedia):

in SpecialRecentchanges.php, line 226 -- currently "conds[] = 'rc_timestamp >= ' . $dbr->addQuotes( $cutoff );" -- change the ">=" to "<=".

Woozle says:

"I don't know if this is a known bug or even a genuine bug (rather than a misunderstanding on my part), but maybe you can test that and see if it works as expected.

"Or, more to the point, consistently works as expected... it seemed to do fine for me, but I only did one test."

Done - some months ago. --Chriswaterguy 21:52, 8 July 2011 (PDT)

Misc old issues[edit | edit source]

These notes were made at "Appropedia:Site development/priorities/archive" and I was the only editor. I now realize these all fit under "Admin tasks" also. I'm deleting the original rather than creating a redirect, as I want to keep the site development subpages tidy.

  1. WYSIWYG editor - FCKEditor looks very close, but not ready yet. We need a replacement for Uniwiki, which is proving to be a problem for some editors, and which clashes with Mediawiki 1.14. So either we work with wikiHow on accelerating the implementation of Wikia's WYSIWYG editor code (which contains a lot of wikia specific hooks) or we find an alternative interface (any suggestions?) - Done
  2. Social features: better integration with network sites such as WiserEarth and GlobalSwadeshi, and better ways of monitoring activity and engaging with people in Appropedia - mw:Extension:SocialProfile?. (Also: better display of RSS feeds, so people can display their blogs in their userspace; Fan mail; OpenSocial) - Done
  • Setting up a test site, for checking new features and settings and making sure they don't break the site, before running them live. This will be MediaWiki, with all the extensions and settings we have now, then adding new features to see if they work. We've been promised help with this, but if you are able to assist, that would be fantastic. - Done

The next rank of issues include:
