Since 2022, CRS México has been implementing the second phase of the Water-Smart Agriculture project –Agua y suelo para la Agricultura (ASA)– in the Mixtec region around Asunción Nochixtlán, Oaxaca, México. This 5-year project aims to support 600 farmers in half a dozen communities. The goal of ASA 2 is to empower current and next-generation agricultural producers, entrepreneurs, and professionals in Central America and México to restore soil and water resources, achieve resilient production, transform agricultural products for markets, and create market-oriented business opportunities, all while contributing to the reduction of rural migration.

Water-Smart Agriculture –Agua y suelo para la Agricultura (ASA)– is a proven practice for managing soil to optimize water use and increase yields. Farmers throughout Central America and México are harnessing the potential of their land and rainfall through ASA's practical and effective farm management techniques. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) collaborates with local and national partners to enhance crop yields and incomes for thousands of families, focusing on restoring soil health and safeguarding vital water resources. The outcome is a radical transformation of the region's deteriorated farmland and the lives dependent on it.

The ASA approach has evolved through years of CRS agricultural programming across Latin America. Past and present programs have contributed to a body of knowledge, tools, and skill sets that drive innovation, furthering CRS’ commitment to extending the benefits of water-smart agriculture to even more communities. Our journey is supported by allies in the public and private sectors, as well as a diverse array of civil society organizations.
