Tito Galán Morales, facilitator of Raíces program promoted by CRS in El Salvador, is seen at dawn in an area located in the Río Frío Canton, Ahuachapán where the use of conservation agriculture practices associated with Agriculture Soil and Water ASA are being promoted. “ We have an area of 321 acres of corn cultivation and we started in the management of stubble. It is a practice to leave the residues of the previous harvest. Conservation agriculture is a process of raising awareness of the farmer to leave traditional practices. In this area there is no major landscape improvement structure, because we have just started. We hope to see the changes as the ASA practices are implemented, the first agricultural cycle we already have some changes, because the stubble is managed, the green fertilizers are managed, the 4Rs are managed and there are already some signs of changes. But in 2 to 3 years we can already see the microbial activity in the soil, and that is transforming the organic matter and creating conditions for the macro fauna to begin to emerge and begin to transform the structure of the soil. This will allow the uptake of water, infiltration and this keeps the soil moist, since they are very stony soils, and that generates difficult conditions for cultivation in times of water crisis. Here a dry period lasts between 15 to 20 days. So if they are unprotected soils, if they are bare soils, if we have clean crops then the production conditions are minimal. Here an average of 30 to 40 quintals per block and according to the data of the companions they spend around 850 to 900 dollars per block. Near here is San Reymundo, it is a place where we have worked for three years and they have reduced costs to 450 and increased production between 80 to 120 quintals per block. There is confidence in the practices of Agriculture, soil and water ASA in being able to implement them. That is why one of the challenges here was to leave the stubble as ground cover ”, he explains. Raíces El Salvador is a comprehensive approach promoted by CRS with Water Smart Agriculture (ASA) practices to restore the agricultural landscape.
